Not everything belongs in storage
While self storage is great for storing your business documents & records, household goods or furniture during a home renovation or move, not everything is storage friendly. Here are some things to think about when deciding what to store…
- Toxic or combustible goods: For obvious reasons, items such as gas bottles, fuel tanks, oxygen tanks, motor oil, acids, fertilizer, paint, fireworks, ammunition etc cannot be stored in a self storage unit.
- Perishable food: Food will attract a lot of rodents and pests, which could damage other items in your and other storage units. Furthermore, some food items will emit a foul odour when they spoil – which could be absorbed into other items such as your stored clothing! We have a thorough pest control program at Otaki Secure Storage, and we need our storers to help ensure vermin stays away.
- Plants or animals: These definitely do not belong in self storage.
- Damp goods: Damp, musty goods on’t belong in a self storage unit. The smell will permeate your other stored goods, causing rot and mould which not only damaged and devalues your goods, but can also cause health issues if left unchecked. To reduce the incidence of mould forming, goods should be clean and dry when put into storage. We also recommend that you use moisture absorbent packs, and check & change them regularly.
